Frequently Asked Questions

An Assessor’s Request for Information, commonly called an RFI, is a request for property-specific information that may be needed to prepare a property assessment or determine whether property is assessable.

Sections 294 and 295 of Alberta’s Municipal Government Act authorize an assessor to inspect property, request the production of relevant records, and require a person to provide information necessary for the assessor to carry out their legislated responsibilities.

Personal information collected for municipal assessment purposes must be managed in accordance with Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act, which replaced the privacy provisions of the former Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act on June 11, 2025.

The Protection of Privacy Act governs the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and safeguarding of personal information held by Alberta public bodies, including municipalities. These responsibilities also apply when assessment services are performed on behalf of a municipality by a contracted service provider.

Commercially sensitive information must also be handled in accordance with applicable assessment, privacy, and access-to-information requirements. Information will only be used or disclosed where authorized or required by law. This may include legislated reporting to Alberta Municipal Affairs or disclosure required as part of an assessment complaint or legal proceeding.

More information is available in Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act Guide.

Not necessarily. A complete response may reduce the need for additional questions or an interior inspection, but the assessor may still require an inspection to understand the property.

Requests are used to obtain current and relevant information about properties. A request may relate to property use, occupancy, construction, renovations, leases, income, expenses, machinery and equipment, or other characteristics that may affect an assessment.

Receiving a request does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with your property or its assessment. Requests may be issued because information is unavailable, because the property has changed, or as part of an initiative to expand and strengthen the information used in preparing fair and equitable assessments.

Yes. Section 295(1) of the Municipal Government Act states that a person must provide, on an assessor’s request, information necessary for the assessor to carry out the assessor’s duties and responsibilities under Parts 9 to 12 of the Act and the regulations.

If you are uncertain about a question, believe that it does not relate to your property, or do not understand why information is required, contact the assessor using the contact information shown in the request. Do not disregard the request.

The assessor may have to prepare the assessment using the information otherwise available. This increases the risk that the assessment will be based on incomplete or outdated information.

Failure to provide requested information within 60 days will also prevent the person from filing an assessment complaint in the following year. The Municipal Government Act also permits an application to the Court of King’s Bench for an order requiring requested information to be produced.

No. Providing requested information does not mean that you agree with the current or future assessment, and it does not waive your right to ask questions about how an assessment was prepared.

However, failing to provide requested information within the statutory 60-day period will prevent you from filing an assessment complaint in the following year.

Provide all information that is reasonably available and explain which questions cannot be answered and why. Do not guess or provide information that you know may be inaccurate.

A response is still required.

Please answer the questions and indicate where there have been no changes.

Yes.  A knowledgeable representative may assist with or complete the response once properly authorized.  Please contact the assessor at Office@MASG.ca to obtain an authorization form.  The owner or occupier must complete and return the form before the representative can act on their behalf or receive information about the property.

The owner or occupier remains responsible for ensuring that the response is complete, accurate, and submitted on time.

There is no predetermined result. The information may result in no change, an increase, a decrease, or a change to the property’s assessment class or valuation treatment.

The purpose of the request is to obtain accurate information so that the property can be assessed fairly and consistently.

Keep a copy of the completed response, all supporting documents, and proof of submission. The assessor may contact you if clarification or additional information is required.

If you have questions or concerns about why information has been requested, how it will be used, whether a particular question applies to you, or how sensitive records should be submitted, please contact the assessor using the contact information provided in the Request for Information.
